Predictions of the northern and southern limits of totality of the solar eclipse on 1999 August 11th _________________________________________________________________ Dr. Alan Fiala, U. S. Naval Observatory, has generated detailed predictions of the northern and southern limits of totality of the solar eclipse on 1999 August 11th, taking into account the lunar profile to define the true limits. They should be accurate to the accuracy of the Watts data, to about half a km. The data start where the path crosses southwestern England and continue to the Romanian Black Sea coast. They are in the attached ASCII text file. To obtain the best video and other observations of Baily's beads, observers should be located from 0.5 km to 1.5 km inside each limit, that is, south of the northern limit and north of the southern limit, with distances measured perpendicularly to the path. Also encouraged are observations by lines of direct visual (be careful for eye safety) and camcorder observers across each limit, to try to define their locations, as has been done during some past eclipses. Such visual observers can simply be asked, "did you see or not see any totality, and if you did see it, maybe you could time the duration with a watch or stopwatch (or stopwatch feature available on many watches now)". Visual observers do not need (and should not have, or else their timings will be worthless) eye protection during totality, but when the last bead (before totality) or the first bead (after totality) is more than 10 times brighter than Venus, then a mylar filter or other good eye protection should be employed.
